Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) Newsletter

Every 1 out of 100 children born in Pakistan is suffering from Congenital Heart Disease (CHD).

NEWSLETTER - DECEMBER 2020

A Brief Introduction

Every 1 out of 100 children born in Pakistan is suffering from Congenital Heart Disease (CHD), and unfortunately we have limited capacity to treat these patients at our hospitals. Subsequently, 70% of CHD patients remain untreated and that may eventually lead to their demise. There is a serious deficiency of trained doctors, quality facilities, adequate infrastructure and necessary funding in this sector.

In 2012, this sad state of affairs led to the formation of PCHF, a non-profit organization working towards providing financial assistance for heart surgeries to deserving and needful children. Through your donations and zakat, we have worked on CHD awareness, patient treatment and arranging medical missions/workshops for public as well as private hospitals.

History will judge us by the difference we make in the everyday lives of children.

The Success Story of a CHD Warrior

"History will judge us by the difference we make in the everyday lives of children." Nelson Mandela

This is the remarkable success story of the young and brave little 1 year-old, Asad Naseer, with Pakistan Children's Heart Foundation (PCHF). At such a tender age, Asad was diagnosed with a Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) known as Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). His parents were absolutely devastated and couldn't imagine a life without him. They were desperate to save the precious life of their child.

In TOF, four related heart defects change the way blood flows to the lungs and through the heart. It is repaired through open-heart surgery soon after birth or later in infancy. In most cases of TOF, too little blood goes to the lungs. This low-oxygen blood then circulates to the rest of the body, and too little oxygen reaches the body tissues. Babies with TOF often have cyanosis, a blue or purple tint to the baby's skin, lips and fingernails.

PCHF provides the highest quality of care for children with heart disease, irrespective of their financial means. Each year around 50,000 children are born with CHD in Pakistan and a large majority of these children are unable to get the treatment required due to lack of facilities, personnel and the high costs involved. That is where PCHF steps in.

Asad's family brought him to PCHF, all the way from Burewala, with tremendously high hopes, looking to end their enormous plight. Asad's father, Naseer Ahmed works abroad, away from his beloved family, in Saudi Arabia, and his wife, Alia Zafar, is a housewife. Thankfully, their prayers were answered as Asad's surgery was scheduled through a swift, smooth and extremely efficient process. The surgery was blessedly a success, and after a few days in the hospital under the special care of our brilliant team of healthcare professionals, Asad was discharged. Naseer and Alia are now proud parents of a CHD warrior.

PCHF made a real difference in the lives of Asad and his family. Together, they can now dream of living an amazing life. PCHF, and more importantly, the children with CHD vitally require your support. Legendary Pakistani cricketer, Misbah-ul-Haq, has also joined PCHF on the journey to conquering CHD in Pakistan, by helping build Pakistan's first dedicated, state-of-the-art Children's Heart Hospital and Research Institute (CHHRI).
